The dry season is the best time to visit Northwest Australia and Kimberley: May – September.
Taking a journey down the infamous Gibb River Road you can explore what Kimberley has to offer: red sands, mountain ranges, pictoresque gorges, waterfalls where you can swim, stunning outback sunsets and Aboriginal rock art sites.
A 4WD guided tour takes you around Kimberley leaving from Broome. Your experienced guides who have a great knowledge of the area will set up bush camps for you, will cook campfire meals while your job is enjoying the scenery, hiking, swimming, watching sunsets and sleeping under the stars.

Full itinerary:
Day 1
Broome – Windjana Gorge
You will be picked up early from your accommodation and head towards the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art Gallery and Tunnel Creek, a river which flows through a water worn tunnel beneath the limestone of the Napier Range. This site holds special significance to the local Aboriginal people. At the end of the day you will take a walk up the gorge, before setting up camp at the base of the range.

Day 2
Windjana Gorge – Mt Barnett ( Manning Gorge)
Back to the Gibb River Road, you continue north to begin your hike of Bell Gorge which is one of the most impressive gorges in the Kimberley. You then head towards Galvans Gorge for a short walk and swim before stopping at Barnett River, our evening destination.

Day 3
Mt Barnett ( Manning Gorge)
A relaxing day with a hike out to Manning Falls for a swim, returning around lunch time. The afternoon is spent taking it easy along the banks of the Barnett River and camp.

Day 4
Manning Gorge ( Mt Barnett) – Munurru ( King Edward River)
Following breakfast, you continue along the infamous Gibb River Road before turning up the Kalumburu Road to Drysdale River Station for fuel and refreshments. The last leg of the day takes you onto the start of the port Warrender Rd where we explore two magnificient Aborginal Rock art sites before arriving at our evening destination. There you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the river.

Day 5
Mitchell Plateau
Today’s drive will be slow and steady to the Mitchell Plateau. The roads are a good example of 4WD terrain. You embark on a short scenic helicopter flight over the Mitchell Plateau and the incredible Mitchell Falls. The scenery is remarkable, and it gives you a great perspective before seeing it on the ground. After exploring the top of the falls, and enjoying a swim, you hike back to the car park, stopping at some Aboriginal Rock Art along the way. You will be back to camp late afternoon.

Day 6
Munurru ( King Edward River) – El Questro
Today is mostly spent driving on the Gibb River Road. First we will got to Ellenbrae Station to meet the wonderful hosts and drink an afternoon tea. Along the way you will be presented with fabulous views of the Kimberley and Cockburn Range. Your evening destination is El Questro Wilderness Park.

Day 7
El Questro
Today you enjoy the beauty of El Questro Wilderness Park, starting with a swim in the magnificent Thermal Pools of Zebedee Springs. This will be followed by a hike into Emma Gorge, in the heart of the Cockburn Ranges where you will enjoy lunch before relaxing at the station, doing laundry or going for a short walk along the banks of the river.

Day 8
El Questro – Kununurra
You join a ¾ day boat cruise of the Ord River. The cruise navigates 55km of river between Kununurra and Lake Argyle.

Day 9
Kununurra – Purnululu National Park ( Bungle Bungles)
Today you travel into the World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park. The Bungle Bungle Range is renowned for its striking orange and grey horizontal banded domes. The distinctive beehive-shaped landforms have been produced by uplift and erosion over the last 20 million years.
Your evening will consist of a sunset viewing of the Bungle Bungle Ranges while enjoying a glass of Champagne, before returning to our evening campsite.

Day 10
Purnululu National Park ( Bungle Bungles)
You spend the day exploring the magnificent beehive formations of this World Heritage Listed Region. This includes hikes into Echidna Chasm, Cathedral Gorge and Piccaninny Creek Lookout. Up until 1982 the region was largely undiscovered’. Prior to 1982 only local Aboriginal people and a handful of stockmen knew the area and in 1987 it became a National Park. An unforgettable helicopter ride over the Bungles is highly recommmended and available at an extra cost.

Day 11
Purnululu National Park – Fitzroy Crossing
You make your way to Halls Creek for morning tea and refreshments then you will be travelling along the Great Northern Highway to Fitzroy Crossing, stopping for lunch and enjoying the views. Our evening destination, the Fitzroy River Lodge, is a beautiful oasis nestled along the banks of the river where you are welcome to take a short evening walk.
Overnight: Fitzroy River Lodge

Day 12
Fitzroy Crossing – Broome
The final day takes you on a boat tour down the Fitzroy River through Geikie Gorge.
You return to Broome late afternoon and will say farewell.

Few options of tour extensions to make your trip longer:
Ningaloo Reef is located in Western Australia and is home for whale sharks and humpback whales.
Whale sharks are around from June to July, in August food permitting. The best time to see humpbacks whales is from August to September so if you choose this option in August for instance you can swim with whale sharks if there is any around and see humpbacks whales.
Other possible options are Sydney and the Blue Mountains and Melbourne with the Great Ocean Road.
